Abstract

This study explores Malaysian students’ perceptions of learning English with a foreign teacher, specifically an Indonesian teacher, at Maahad Tahfiz Baitul Ehsan Maluri, Kuala Lumpur. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected from 20 students through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was applied to identify key patterns in students’ responses. Findings indicate that students generally have positive perceptions of the foreign teacher’s performance, particularly in lesson preparation, clarity of explanation, and respectful interaction. The teacher was viewed as confident, approachable, and motivating, which enhanced students’ interest and participation in English learning. However, minor challenges were found in classroom management and individualized feedback. Overall, the study concludes that foreign teachers can positively influence English language learning in multicultural contexts when they adapt their teaching to students’ linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
