Abstract

This study aims to analyze the learning materials in the English vocabulary book titled 500 Vocabulary Words Kids Need to Know used at Maahad Tahfiz Baitul Ehsan Maluri Kuala Lumpur. The primary focus is to evaluate the alignment of the materials with the criteria of a good textbook as defined by McDonough, Shaw, and Tomlinson's theory. This research employs content analysis with a qualitative approach to explore the strengths and weaknesses of the book. The primary data source is a bilingual (English and Malay) vocabulary book designed for beginner-level students, and two books by McDonough and Tomlinson as the secondary source used for the analysis. The analysis was conducted based on 18 criteria of a good textbook. The findings reveal that the book meets 14 out of the 18 criteria. The book successfully addresses students’ learning needs through systematic vocabulary presentation, relevant illustrations, and a clear layout. The materials are also graded progressively, beginning with simpler concepts and advancing to more complex topics, thereby supporting the gradual mastery of vocabulary. However, the book has certain limitations. It lacks a guide outlining the authors’ perspectives on language learning approaches or methodologies. Additionally, there is no teacher’s guidance available to support the implementation of the materials. These shortcomings reduce the book’s potential as a primary learning resource. The findings are expected to assist educators in selecting learning materials that better cater to students’ needs. Furthermore, the results can serve as a reference for future studies evaluating textbooks in diverse educational contexts.
