Abstract
This research was focused on analyzing students’ problems in translating Indonesian into English in descriptive text at grade X of MAN 1 Padang Lawas Plus Keterampilan dan Riset. There were four kinds of the problems that researcher have written in this research, namely: grammatical problems, lexical problems, phonological problems, and stylistyc problems. This research focused on grammatical problems only in which there were 3 sub-problems that researcher was interested in analyzing, such as: Tenses, incomplete sentence, and word order. Formulation of the problems were what were the problems in translating Indonesian into English in descriptive text faced by the students and what was the dominant problem faced by the students. This research was aimed to find out the problems in translating descriptive text from Indonesian to English faced by the tenth grade students of MAN 1 Padang Lawas Plus Keterampilan dan Riset, and to find out the dominant problem in translating This research used qualitative research, sources of data from this research were students from MAN 1 Padang Lawas Plus Keterampilan dan Riset in class X Mia 2 with the total of 42 students. The instruments was translation test in descriptive text. The data was processed by reading the students’ translation, looking the students’ problems, analyzing the students’ problems and identifying the types of the problems according to H. Ghazalas’ theory, and describing the result of research and making conclusion. The result showed that, there were 362 of mistakes made by the students that have been found in all the students’ answer sheet. From 362 mistakes, there were 233 or 64.5%, that was total of mistakes that students made in incomplete sentence. 80 or 22.1%, that was total of mistakes that students made in tenses. 49 or 13.5%, that was total of mistakes that students made in word order. It can be indicated that the dominant types of students’ problems in translating Indonesian descriptive text into English faced by the tenth grade students of MAN 1 Padang Lawas Plus Keterampilan dan Riset was incomplete sentence.
