Abstract

This research focused on the effect of map media on writing recount text mastery at the grade X students of SMA N 3 Padangsidimpuan. The students’ problems in writing were: 1) limited on vocabulary, 2) less comprehension about grammar, 3) the interest in writing English is low. The purpose of this research was to describe the student’s ability in writing recount text before and after using the map media and to examine whether there is or there is no effect of map media on students’ ability in writing recount text at grade X of SMA N 3 Padangsidimpuan. The method was used in this research was experimental research. Two classes were chosen randomly as the sample. They were X-3 as the experimental class that consisted of 30 students and X-6 as the control class that consisted of 30 students. It was taken after conducting normality and homogeneity test. The data was derived from pre-test and post-test. To analyze the data, the researcher used t-test formula. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that mean score of experimental class after using map media was higher than control class. Mean score of experimental class before using map media was 68.91 and mean score of experimental class after using map media was 79.5. Besides, the score of tcount was higher than ttable (3.76 > 2.021). It meant that the hypothesis alternative (Ha) was accepted. It was concluded that there was the effect of map media on writing recount text mastery at the grade X students of SMA N 3 Padangsidimpuan.
