Abstract

The purposes of this research are 1) to describe the students’ vocabulary mastery before using Hangman game at SMP N 5 Padangsidimpuan, 2) to describe the students’ vocabulary mastery after using Hangman game at SMP N 5 Padangsidimpuan, and 3) to examine whether there is a significant effect of using hangman game on students‟ vocabulary mastery at the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 5 Padangsidimpuan or not. This research uses a quantitative approach in experimental design by using pre-test and post-test design. The sample is VIII-1 as experimental group consisted of 30 students, and VIII-3 as control group consisted of 30 students. The data were collected through multiple choices test, and analyzed by using independent sample t-test. The result of this research shows that mean score of experimental group before using hangman game is 65.16 the category was enough, the mean score of experimental group after using hangman game is 81.33 the category was good. From the result of t-test, tcount>ttable (8.921>1.671), which means that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected and it is implied that there is a significant effect of Hangman Game on students vocabulary mastery at SMPN 5 Padangsidimpuan. It can be concluded that Hangman Game is very useful on vocabulary mastery. The researcher recommended Hangman Game to teach vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade of SMPN 5 Padangsidimpuan.
