Abstract

This study aims to analyze the problems faced by students at SMA Negeri 3 Padangsidimpuan in speaking English.The focus of the study covers the problems experienced by students in speaking and the factors that cause them, as well as the teachers' plans to overcome the students' speaking problems. The method used is qualitative. The researcher collected data through observation and interviews. The researcher selected 10 students from class XI-I and English teacher as the sample. The sample was taken using purposive sampling. The results of the study show that students experience various problems when speaking, such as inhibition, nothing to say, lowor uneven participation, and the use of mother tongue use, with low or uneven participation being the most dominant problem faced by students. These problems also arise due to several factors, namely psychological factors, linguistic factors, environmental factors, and student factors. Among these, linguistic factors, namely vocabulary, are the dominant factor experienced by students. This study conclude that students' speaking problems are caused by a combination of interrelated internal and external factors. Therefore, teachers state that there is a need for a teaching approach that pays attention to aspects such as language proficiency, as well as acommunicative learning environment, more diverse learning methods, and support for active student involvement in speaking English.
