Abstract
Human beings are communicating as bilingual community speak by switching two or more than one language has been a social phenomenon in social life, it is called code switching. This research has objectives namely (1) to know code switching is found in the novel Edensor by Andrea Hirata, (2) to know the types of code switching are found in the novel Edensor by Andrea Hirata, (3) to find the characters’ reasons of using code switching in the novel Edensor by Andrea Hirata. This research used qualitative research as a research design by content analysis approach. Then, the researcher selected one of Andrea Hirata’s novel mainly Edensor as the primary of data sources. Then, the data collection was using document method and for checking the trustworthiness of the thesis, the researcher used triangulation of data source. The research findings for this research were four codes switching that had been occurred in Edensor novel. 9 times for tag code switching, 31 times for inter-sentential code switching, 28 times for intra-sentential code switching, 2 times for involving a change of pronunciation, and 0 times for establishing continuity with the previous speakers. Automatically the amount of the whole code switching in Edensor novel was 70 times. It might be seen from the percentage for tag code switching was 12, 9%, inter-sentential code switching was 44,3%, intra-sentential code switching was 40%, involving a change of pronunciation was 2,8%, and establishing continuity with the previous speakers was 0%. The characters’ reasons of using code switching in the novel Edensor by Andrea Hirata based on Charlotte Hoffman’s theory were talking about particular topic, quoting somebody else, being emphatic about something, interjection, repetition used for clarification, intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, expressing group identity, to soften or strengthen request or commend, the need real lexical.
