Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the correlation between of students critical reading strategies and their reading comprehension of fifth semester students of English Department UIN SYAHADA Padangsidimpuan. The researcher used quantitative research by applying correlational research design for conducting the research. The population of this research was the fifth semester of English Department UIN SYAHADA Padangsidimpuan. The sample of this research was chose based on total sampling. The total of population was 50, in this case researcher took all of students from the population to be a sample. The instruments used in this research are questionnairean and test. To analysis test, firstly, the researcher gave a critical reading comprehension test to students. Then, the researcher gave reading strategies questionairre. The calculation showed the result of pearson product moment calculation was 0.49 which classified as Moderate to substansial relationship and sig(2-tailed) is 0.011 which is lower than 0.05 (5%) as a significance value. It means the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be concluded that there was a correlation between critical reading strategies and reading comprehension at the fifth semester of English Department UIN SYAHADA Padangsidimpuan.
