Abstract

This research discussed about teachers’ questioning strategies in classroom interaction at eight grade of SMP IT Darul Hasan Padangsidimpuan. Teachers’ questioning strategies has a big influence on students learning development, making students more active and confident in the learning process in the class. The purposes of this research were to know the types of questions are used by the teachers in classroom interaction, to know the difficulties in using the questioning strategy in classroom interaction, to know the students’ reaction by using questioning strategy in classroom interaction and to know the effectiveness of using questioning strategy in classroom interaction. The researcher subjects were two English teachers of the eighth grade students of SMP IT Darul Hasan Padangsidimpuan. The object of the research was teachers’ strategy in making questions to the students. The data collection of this research was observation and interview. The technique of data analysis used data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The research findings showed that: 1) there were three teachers’ questioning strategies in classroom interaction;literal question, inferential question and metacognitive question. 2) teachers’ difficulties in using questioning strategy in the classroom are diversity of students’ characters and most students are weak in English vocabulary. 3) students’ activeness during use questioning strategy in the classroom there are students who are excited but there are also who are not excited. 4) teachers’ questioning strategy are very effectiveness in classroom interaction because students more confidence and increasing in learning and also students more active in the classroom. This research concluded that the teacher used three types of questioning strategies and by implementing this strategy of course teacher have difficulties but it is very effectiveness to apply it when study in the classroom.
