Abstract

Present continuous tense is one of tenses that express the event that happening at the moment. However, this material is one of the materials at the fourth semester English department in UIN Syahada Padangsidimpuan. Present continuous tense should be mastered well by English learners. The purpose of this quantitative research is to describe the present continuous tense mastery of the fourth semester students (NIM 21) of English department UIN Syahada Padangsidimpuan. The object of this research is the students’ mastery in present continuous tense. The sample in this research is 27 students who taken from the fourth semester of English department UIN Syahada Padangsidimpuan. The technique of taking the sample used random sampling technique. This research is quantitative research especially quantitative descriptive approach. The researcher used test as the instrument in this research. The test consisted of 25 questions in multiple choice items. Every correct answer times by 4 so the highest score was 100. Next, the data were analyzed by using descriptive quantitative technique and counting mean score. The result of this research informed that there are 9 students (33.33%) who got score in scale 81-100 or very good category. In enough category or score in scale 61-80 got by 8 students (29.63%). The same percentage, 29.63% (8 students) got score in scale 41-60 and the interpretation of the value is enough category. The last two students (7.41%) got score in scale 21-40 or in law category. The table also shows that there is no one got score under 20 or in very low category. The calculated mean score was 69, categorized into good level.
