Abstract

This research is focused on analyzing compound words. Compound word is combination of two words to form a new word. Compound word can found in daily spoken and written form such as book, novel, newspaper and other. This research focus on the first subtitles until the fifth subtitles. The researcher interested to analyze compound word in The Land of Five Towers novel translated by Angie Kilbane. Formulation of the problems are what are compound words in the Land of Five Towers and what are the dominant compound words in The Land of Five Towers novel translated by Angie Kilbane. This research is aimed to find out compound words in The Land of Five Towers, to find the dominant types of compound words used in The Land of Five Towers novel translated. This research used library research, the data is taken from novel taranlated by Angie Kilbane. The technique used in collecting data is documentation method because the researcher collected the data from novel. The data collection used the following steps: read all through the novel, find the sentence that contained compound words, and coding each sentence that contained compound words and analyze the data are identifying the types of compound words according to McCarthy theory. The result shows that, there are 60 sentences that have compound words in The Land of Five Towers from first subtitle through fifth subtitle. From 60 sentences, there are 43 items of compound noun or 72%, 14 items compound verb or 23%, 1 items of compound adjective or 2%, and 2 item of compound preposition or 3%. It can be indicated that the dominant types of compound words in The Land of Five Towers is compound noun.
