Abstract
This research discussed about correlation between learning autonomy and writing mastery at the fifth semester students of English Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan. The problems of this research were the students lack independents’ in writing, students cannot write nicely and students do not have confidence in writing. This research has three formulations of problems, they were: 1) how is the learning autonomy at the fifth semester students of English Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan. 2) how is the writing mastery at the fifth semester students of English Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan. 3) is there any significant correlation between learning autonomy and writing mastery at the fifth semester students of English Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan. The aims of this research were to know students’ learning autonomy at the fifth semester students of English Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan, to know students’ writing mastery at the fifth semester students of English Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan, and to find out the correlation between learning autonomy and writing mastery at the fifth semester students of English Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan. This research is a correlation research with the population was the fifth semester students of English Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan. The sample of this research was population sample, they are 61 students. The researcher used questionnaire for learning autonomy and test (free writing) for writing mastery as the instrument for collecting data. The data were analyzed statistically by using product moment. The calculation of product moment by getting correlation coefficient rxy = 0.579 and rtable on 5% significant level was 0.254. Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted namely 0.579 > 0.254 (rcount > rtable). Based on calculation of tcount the result was 5.455 and ttable on 5% significant level was 2.000. Based on calculation of tcount, the result was tcount > ttable (5.455 > 2.000). It meant there was significant correlation between learning autonomy and writing mastery at the fifth semester students of English Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan in enough category.
