Abstract

The research focused on improving speaking mastery through small group discussion method at the Eight grade students of MTs Al-Ansor Manunggang Julu Padangsidimpuan. The problems in this research was many students cannot speak English in class, students have lack of vocabulary, students felt shame and not confidence communicate in English, speaking was very difficult to say and express the idea. The researcher did a research on the title of Improving Speaking Mastery Through Small Group Discussion Method at The Eighth Grade Students of MTs Al-Ansor. The aim of this research was to describe and to know significant small group discussion to students speaking mastery at the Eight grade students of MTs Al-Ansor Manunggang Julu Padangsidimpuan. The research was conducted by Classroom Action Research. The population was students at the Eight grade MTs Al-Ansor Manunggang Julu. The sample of this researcher was grade VIII D was 15 students. In technique of analysis data took qualitative and quantitative data. The research used observation and test to take the data. Based on the result of this research, the students’ speaking was improved with mean score test 1 in first cycle 62.67 and students passed the KKM 6 students (40%) and test 2 in second cycle mean score was 77.33 and the students passed the KKM 13 students (86.67%). It can be concluded that mean score in cycle 2 through small group discussion method higher than cycle 1. Finally students speaking mastery could be improved small group discussion method. So, it was recommended that small group discussion method could be used in teaching speaking in classroom based on this research.
