Abstract

This research discussed about grammatical cohesion in President Erdogan’s Speech which included reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction. Grammatical cohesion is very important to students. By knowing it they will get easier to understand about one sentence to another sentence has interrelated meaning in a paragraph. There were two formulation of the problem in this research, the first is what types of grammatical cohesion appear in president Erdogan’s speech. The second, what is the dominant of grammatical cohesion in President Erdogan’s Speech. The objectives of this research were to find grammatical cohesion and dominant one in President Erdogan’s Speech. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The data sources were taken from you tube. The research instruments were the document manuscript of President Erdogan and the researcher because the researcher was the one who was able to observe the object of analysis and analyzed them. The data were analyzed by using Halliday and Hasan’s theory about cohesion that appeared in the speech delivered by the President of Turkey. From the results of data analysis in the speech, there are four kinds of grammatical cohesion found in speech. They are reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. The dominant of grammatical cohesion in President Erdogan’s Speech is reference with the total percentage 73%. The percentage of each grammatical cohesion derived from President Erdogan’s Speech is 1.80% derived from substitution types, 0.97% contains ellipsis types and 23% derived from conjunction types.
