Abstract

This research focused on the effect of Spelling Bee Game Technique on Students‟ Vocabulary Mastery at Grade VII SMP Negeri 5 Padangsidimpuan. Teacher‟s technique became a problem in learning vocabulary. The teacher still used the conventional technique and did not have variation in teaching vocabulary. The students‟ problem in vocabulary mastery were: 1) students were difficult in remembering new vocabulary, 2) students were bored in learning vocabulary, 3) students were lack motivation in learning vocabulary, and 4) students seldom practice the new vocabulary. The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of spelling bee game technique on students‟ vocabulary mastery before and after using the technique at grade VII SMP Negeri 5Padangsidimpuan. The method used in this research was experimental research where the researcher chose two classes as the sample. They were VII-5 as experimental class that consisted of 31 students and VII-6 as control class that consisted of 30 students. The data was derived from pre-test, and post-test. To analyze the data, the researcher used t-test formula. After the data have been analyzed, the researcher found that there was the difference of mean score after using spelling bee game technique. Mean score of experimental class before using spelling bee game technique was 68.35 and mean score after using spelling bee game technique was 90.20. The effect of spelling bee game technique on students‟ vocabulary mastery was 1.873 with t0 is higher than tt (1.873> 1.671). It means Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. So, there was a significant effect of spelling bee game technique on students‟ vocabulary mastery at grade VII SMP Negeri 5 Padangsidimpuan.
