Abstract

This thesis discussed about what the students’ difficulties in writing paragraph at grade XI SMA Negeri 8 Padangsidimpuan and what teachers’ solutions to solve the students’ difficulties in writing paragraph at grade XI SMA Negeri 8 Padangsidimpuan. Based on the problems of this research, the aims of this research were to know the students’ difficulties in writing paragraph at grade XI SMA Negeri 8 Padangsidimpuan, and to know the teachers’ solutions to solve the students’ difficulties in writing paragraph at grade XI SMA Negeri 8 Padangsidimpuan. This research used qualitative research. Qualitative research was the research that done by observing the phenomenon around us based on the reality. The instrument of data collecting that used in this research were observation, interview and testy. Then the data analyzed by using logical descriptive. After doing the research to the students at grade XI SMA Negeri 8 Padangsidimpuan, it could be concluded that the students felt difficult in writing paragraph. Their difficulties in writing paragraph were the difficulties in finding the main idea of paragraph, developing the main idea of paragraph, making the concluding of paragraph, making the unity of paragraph, making coherence of paragraph and using grammar. The other difficulties were the difficulties in vocabularies, constructing the sentences and using punctuation. While the solutions that gave by the English teachers to solve the students’ difficulties in writing paragraph at grade XI SMA Negeri 8 Padangsidimpuan were explained again about tense, how to construct the sentences and how to make paragraph, ordered the students to memorize the vocabularies, gave the example of paragraph and gave the exercises. While the solutions that gave by the English teachers were explained again how to make a paragraph, aspect paragraph, requirements of paragraph and kinds of paragraph. Then, gave the example of paragraph; gave chance to the students to ask about unclear explanation; and gave task to write the paragraph.
