Abstract

The Problem were the students have low speaking so that, the did not know how to say something fluently. They are also less practice to speaking English, because they are not many vocabulary, they are also shy, afraid wrong, maybe nervous to speaking English. And perhaps, there is another problem from the teacher because the teacher has been low motivation in learning English. The objectives of the research were to describe the students’ speaking ability by using debate technique and role-play technique and to know the differences between debate4 and role-play technique at eleventh grade in Islamic senior high school (MAN) 1 Padangsidimpuan. This research was done in MAN 1Padngsidimpuan at street Sutan Sori Pada Mulia No. 31 c north Padangsidimpuan. The kind of this research was quantitative research by using experimental method. The researcher used the t-test for analyzing data. After the research was done it can be known that the students’ speaking ability by using debate and role-play technique was good. There was different between debate and role-play technique on students’ speaking ability at eleventh grade MAN 1 Padangsidimpuan, role-play technique is the better than debate technique in teaching speaking, even though the result was not significant. The hypothesis was accepted where there is difference of using debate technique and role-play technique on students’ speaking ability at eleventh grade in MAN 1 Padangsidimpuan.
