Abstract

This research is talking about improving students’ writing ability through working in a group at eighth grade SMP Negeri 4 Batang Angkola. The objectives of the research are to know students achievement score and to know factors which influence students’ writing achievement at SMP Negeri 4 Batang Angkola. Researcher conducted classroom action research (CAR) to solve the students’ problems in writing. The CAR was done based on John Elliot’s design. The researcher conducted two test and two cycles in this research. The participants of this research is one class consists of 24 students from class VIII B SMP Negeri 4 Batang Angkola, Academic year 2014. The technique of data collection are test, observation, field note and interview. Based on the result of the research, researcher found that the students’ writing ability was improved. It is supported by the result of the testing 1 in the cycle 1 was 58.75. The result testing 2 in cycle 1 was 63.33. The result testing 3 in cycle 2 was 72.50 that is lower than the result of testing 4 in cycle 2 was 76.25. Students’ problems in grammar is solved by researcher giving clear explanation what simple present tense is, explain the using of verb which can be used in simple present and explain about subject, predicate, object. Later, students’ problems in vocabulary is solved by researcher ordered the students to bring dictionary and also asked them to learn more vocabulary items by themselves at home. Next, students’ problems in mechanic is solved by researcher giving explanation the important of punctuation and word spelling well in the text. In addition, students’ problems in fluency is solved by researcher explain what sentence structure is and give example based on learning material. Students’ problems in form is solved by researcher explain how to arrange and organize sentences into the paragraph, then explain what generic structure is. Finally, students make a noise solved by advised them, student make class dirty solved by advised them to throw garbage into the trash and student asked permission to the bathroom solved by researcher giving punish.
