Abstract

This research discussed about the effect of using discussion method on students’ ability in speaking report text of MAN 1 Padangsidimpuan. Students’ ability in speaking report text is still far from the expectation. Furthermore, looking to the difficulties which are found by students, it can be influenced by many factor, such as: teaching method, intelligence, motivation, interest, grammar mastery, personality of the teacher, environment, facility of the students, society, library, family, etc. The objective of this research was to know the extent of students’ ability in speaking report text, the extent of students’ ability in speaking report text using discussion method, and whether there is significant effect of using discussion method on students’ ability in speaking report text of MAN1 Padangsidimpuan. Solve the problem, the researcher conducted experimental research, by implementing discussion method. The researcher applied three tests in this research for collecting the data and used oral test to analyze the score of students’ speaking ability data. The participant of this research was two classes as an experimental group (39 students) and control group (37students). Based on the research result, the mean score of discussion method for pretest in experimental group before using discussion method was 63,53, the post-test after using discussion method was 85,75 and the mean score for pre-test in control group was 60,8, the post-test in control group was 72,14. Therefore, the mean score after using discussion method was higher than before using discussion method. The last score of the calculation above indicated t0 > ts (18,488 > 1,666) It means that hypothesis was accepted. The hypothesis of research was there is significant effect of using discussion method on students’ ability in speaking report text.
