Abstract

The research was taken based on fact that most of students of the Second Grade English Education Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan pronounce English rising intonation incorrectly. Many students still have difficulties in pronouncing the words. The researcher wanted to analyze students’ intonation ability by reading a paragraph. The objectives of the research were to describe students’ intonation ability of the Second Grade of English Education Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan by reading a paragraph, to find the difficulties students’ intonation of the Second Grade English Education Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan by reading a paragraph, to explain the reason of lecturer and students to know the reason of the difficulties by students in pronouncing rising intonation by reading a paragraph. The research used Descriptive Qualitative Method. The data taken from test, the techniques for collecting data with the test as follow, The test was given to 15 students who become informant of the research. The informant was tested by reading a paragraph. Then their pronunciation in reading was recorded. The test is recorded in order to prove their ability in pronunciation, especially for rising intonation. The recorder is used to record the test, so that the researcher can analysis the data based on recorder. Beside the test, the researcher took the data from interview. The result was found that students’ rising intonation by reading a paragraph of the Second Grade English Education Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan was still low score 56.5. The students difficult in rising intonation and the students difficult in intonated the text and dominantly wrong when intonated the text, the students difficult in study pronunciation especially intonation, the students difficulties in pronouncing the English word, the students difficult in speaking English because the said that the English is foreign language. Their tongue was stiff. After analyzing the data. It was concluded that students’ rising intonation by reading a paragraph students of the Second Grade English Education Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan was still low.
