Abstract

This research aims to explained about the effect of grammar translation method on students’ ability in reading descriptive text at grade X of SMA Negeri 1 arse. The problems of this research were most of them students get low achievement in reading, and most of them lack of motivation in reading, and also most of them do not have a good method in reading or they do not have the strategy. So, the students’ ability in reading did not fulfill expectation. The aim of this research was to find out the effect of grammar translation method on students’ ability in reading descriptive text at grade X of SMA Negeri 1 arse. This research employed experimental research. The population of this research was the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Arse. The total of population were fourth classes. Then, the sample of the research was 2 classes, experiment class (X-1) and control class X-2). It was taken after conducting normality and homogeneity test. To collect the data, researcher used test for measuring students’ ability in reading descriptive text. To analysis the data, the researcher used t-test. Based on the result of the research, researcher showed the description of the data was found that the result of experimental class and control class in pre-test (72.1>70.2). In post test the result of experiment class and control class was higher than control class (80.6> 66.8), and the score of tcount was bigger than ttable (2.14 > 2.021). It means that the hypothesis alternative (Ha) was accepted. It was concluded that there was the effect of grammar translation method on students’ ability in reading descriptive text at grade X of SMAN 1 Arse.
