Abstract

This research is about The Students’ Ability on Giving Synonyms of Words from Descriptive Text at Grade VIII SMP Negeri 1 Sipirok Kabupaten Tapanuli Selatan. The objectives of this research are to know the students’ ability on giving synonyms of word from descriptive text, to find the students’ difficulties and to explain the causes of the students’ difficulties on Giving Synonyms of Words from Descriptive Text at grade VIII SMP Negeri 1 Sipirok. The research is done by using qualitative approach in descriptive method. The sources of data are students in grade VIII-1 consist of 28 students and English teacher in SMP Negeri 1 Sipirok. The instrument of data collection is test and interview. After doing the research, the researcher knows the students’ ability on giving synonyms of words from descriptive text at grade VIII SMP Negeri 1 Sipirok, by the mean score, it is 42.14. It can be categorized into enough categories. The students’ difficulties on giving synonyms of words from descriptive text were difficult to know the meaning of new word, the students felt difficult when they wanted to find synonymous word, some students do not know synonymous word of familiar word in the test and there were some students who know the meaning of word in test but they did not know synonym in Indonesian or English. The causes of the students’ difficulties on giving synonyms of words from descriptive text are to find the word meaning, guessing, because of seldom using dictionary, English subject is not the only subject the students have to take in the school, lack of vocabulary, lack of reading English text book, and less motivation in learning English.
