Abstract

This research concerned about the comparative study of students’ reading ability by using Discussion method and Investigation method at Grade VIII of SMP Negeri 1 Marancar. The problems of this research were most of students had lack of vocabulary mastery, lack of motivation, students feel reading is boring, and students unable to integrate text and context. The purpose of this research was to find out the difference between Discussion Method and Investigation Method of students’ ability in reading comprehension at grade VIII of SMP Negeri 1Marancar. This research employed experimental research. The population of this research was the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 1 Marancar. The total of population were three classes. Then, the sample of the research was 2 classes, experiment class I (VIII-1) and experiment class II (VIII-2). It was taken randomly after conducting normality and homogeneity test. To collect the data, researcher used test for measuring students’ ability in reading narrative text. To analysis the data, the researcher used t-test. Based on the result of the research, researcher showed the description of the data was found that the result of experimental class I and Experiment class II in pre-test (72.6>67.95). In post test the result of experiment class I and Experiment class II was higher than Experiment class II (87.1> 68.85). So, it was concluded that Discussion Method was better than Investigation Method. The score of tcount was bigger than ttable(27.69 > 2.00). It means that the hypothesis alternative (Ha) was accepted, and it was concluded that there was the difference between students’ reading ability by using Discussion and Investigation Method at Grade VIII of SMP Negeri1 Marancar.
