Abstract

This research focused on the effect of Using Keyword Method on students’ vocabulary mastery at grade VIII of MTs Negeri Batangtoru. The students’ problems in vocabulary were: 1) students’ low in vocabulary, 2) students less interest the teacher’s method, 3) students still use mother tongues in the classroom. Finally, the students were difficult in every fields of their learning process such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. The purpose of this research was to know whether there is the significant effect of Using Keyword Method on Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at grade VIII of MTs Negeri Batangtoru. The method used in this research was experimental research. Two classes were chosen randomly as the sample. They were VIII-2 as experimental class that consisted of 24 students and VIII-3 as control class that consisted of 22 students. It was taken after conducting normality and homogeneity test. The data was derived from pre-test and post-test. To analyze the data, the researcher used t-test formula. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that mean score of experimental class after using Keyword Method was higher than control class. Mean score of experimental class before using Keyword Method was 55.62 and mean score after using Keyword Method was 82.62. Meanwhile, the mean score of control class in post test was 68.58. Besides it, the score of tcount was bigger than ttable(4.205>2.021). It meant that the hypothesis alternative (Ha) was accepted. It was concluded that there was a significant effect of using Keyword Method on Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at Grade VIII of MTs Negeri Batangtoru.
