Abstract

The purposes of this research were to examine the students’ vocabulary mastery before and after applying Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) Method, and to examine whether there was significant effect of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) Method to the students’ vocabulary mastery or not. The kind of this research was true experimental research with pre-test – post-test control group design. The population of this research was all the VIII grade students at SMPN 2 Padangsidimpuan. The sample of this research was the VIII-7 students as the experimental class that consist of 30 students, and VIII-3 students as the control class that consist of 30 students. Furthermore, the instrument used in this research was multiple choice test. The researcher used Product Momen formula to validate the instrument and Cronbach’s Alpha formula to test the reliability of the instrument. The researcher used t-test formula to verify the hypothesis. The result showed that the tcount was 8.622 and ttable was 2.000. The t-test proved that tcount was greater than ttable, which means Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. The result of this research showed that there was significant effect of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) Method on vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Padangsidimpuan.
