Abstract

This study aims to analyze the research trends on topics and methods in writing theses of undergraduate students of English department UIN Syahada from 2022-2024. This research was conducted using qualitative methods with document analysis. The data sources were several theses by English language education students. This study involved 282 theses from English major students in 2022-2024, and the data was analyzed to determine research trends on topics and methods among students. The findings revealed that the 3 most trends topic are ”writing” with 61 thesis (21.63%), “vocabulary” with 54 thesis (19.14%), and “other topic related to education” with 47 thesis (16.66%). Meanwhile, the results of trending methods are experimental research with 99 thesis (35.10%). The less topic is listening, the less methods are inferential statistics, narrative research, grounded theory study, case study, exploratory sequential design and the last is embedded design. Overall, there are several research topics and methods that are rarely, if ever, addressed. The low diversity of research methods suggests the need to develop methodological insight through training and mentoring for less frequently used methods.
