Abstract

This research investigates pronunciation errors in English homophones made by fourth-semester students of the English Department at UIN Syahada Padangsidimpuan. The study aims to identify the types of errors students commonly make and explore the efforts of lecturers in addressing these issues. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combines quantitative data from pronunciation tests with qualitative data from semi-structured interviews. A total of 30 students participated in a pronunciation test involving 50 homophone word pairs, resulting in there are only 211 errors found in pronuncing homophone out of 3000 words. The errors were analyzed based on Dulay’s surface strategy taxonomy: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The analysis revealed that misformation was the most dominant error (91.09%), followed by addition (4.74%) and omission (4.27%), while misordering errors were not found. Interviews with English lecturers revealed that students struggle primarily with producing diphthongs and distinguishing similar sounds, often influenced by their first language (Bahasa Indonesia). To address these issues, lecturers employed various strategies such as pronunciation drills, diagnostic reading, and the use of music and songs to enhance student engagement and phonetic awareness. This study emphasizes the importance of focused pronunciation training and appropriate teaching strategies to improve students' pronunciation skills in English, especially in recognizing and pronouncing homophones correctly.
