Abstract

This research is about students’ difficulties in mastering passive at grade XI MAN 1 Padang Lawas, students’ got difficulties in mastering passive voice, the students’ difficulties are less understanding on grammar, to change the verb, and to change of auxiliary. The purpose of this research to know the students’ passive voice at grade XI MAN 1 Padang Lawas, to know the students’ difficulties in mastering passive voice at grade XI MAN 1 Padang Lawas, and the then to know the students’ effort to overcome the difficulties in mastering passive voice at grade XI MAN 1 Padang Lawas. This research uses mixed method, they are quantitative and qualitative research. The population of this research is all students at XI grade of MAN 1 Padang Lawas, and the sample is some students at grade XI MAN 1 Padang Lawas, it is consisting of twenty-four students from every class of XI, and it was taken by random sampling. In this research use multiple choice questions and uses means score to know the student’s interpretation in answering the passive voice test. Based on the result of the research, the mean score was 52. It is meaning the students mastering passive voice of MAN 1 Padang Lawas was less categorized. Then, students got difficulties in changing the verb and the auxiliary. Finally, the students’ effort to overcome the difficulties in mastering passive voice with memorizing the formulas, memorizing verbs such as regular verbs and irregular verbs, reading more English books to increase vocabulary and often talk with friends using English language, learning more about the tenses if there is material that is not understood, and can asking the teacher and friends.
